What are Blocked Fallopian Tubes?
Blocked fallopian tubes, also called tubal occlusion, occur when the passage inside the fallopian tube is partially or completely obstructed. This prevents sperm from reaching the egg and stops a fertilized egg from traveling to the uterus for implantation. Tubal factor infertility accounts for approximately 25–30% of all female infertility cases.
Blockages can occur at different locations along the tube:
- Proximal occlusion: blockage near the junction with the uterus
- Mid-tubal blockage: obstruction in the middle segment of the tube
- Distal occlusion (hydrosalpinx): blockage at the far end of the tube, causing fluid accumulation
