What is Azoospermia?
Azoospermia is a condition in which a man's semen contains no sperm at all. It is diagnosed when no sperm are found in two separate semen analysis tests performed after centrifugation. Azoospermia is classified into two main types, each with different causes and treatment approaches:
- Obstructive Azoospermia (OA): The testes produce sperm normally, but a physical blockage in the reproductive tract (epididymis, vas deferens, or ejaculatory ducts) prevents sperm from reaching the semen. Sperm are present in the testes and can be retrieved surgically.
- Non-Obstructive Azoospermia (NOA): The testes fail to produce adequate sperm due to a problem with sperm production itself. This is the more challenging form, but with Micro-TESE surgery, sperm can often still be found in small pockets of active tissue within the testes.
